How To Take Care Of Costume Wigs

Cleaning Guide For Your Synthetic Hair Wig

This is a guide only and no responsibility is taken for any work carried out by unqualified persons.

By properly caring for your wig, you will extend the life of your wig. Having more than one wig is recommended not only for different hairstyles, but also to allow the proper time for cleaning and drying your wig.

It is recommended to wash a wig after wearing 12-15 times. However, depending on perspiration, body oils, pollution and styling product build-up, you may want to wash your wig more or less frequently.

To reduce the need for washing your wig, make sure you always keep your own hair clean while wearing it. A wig cap can also help.

You should only use products formulated specifically for synthetic and/or human hair wigs. Normal hair shampoos and conditioners are oil-based and may coat the wig hair causing it to look dull and lifeless.
Cleaning Instructions

1. Undo adjustment straps at back, remove tape/adhesive.

2. Gently comb out any tangles using your fingers or a wide-toothed wig comb. Remember always start at the ends working your way up. Do not use a brush.

3. Fill large container with 2 litres of COLD water and 1 tablespoon of Wig Care Shampoo specially formulated for synthetic hair – mix well. Do not use hot water as it may damage the fiber and remove the body.

4. Immerse the wig in the solution and gently agitate. Let it soak for five minutes.

5. If the wig or cap is stained with makeup, apply a paste made out of baking soda and shampoo and gently scrub with an old toothbrush until clean. Baking soda is ideal for removing makeup as it cuts through the heaviest residue without damaging the material.

6. Rinse your wig 3 or 4 times in cool or cold water until all shampoo is completely rinsed out.

7. Refill the container with 2 litres of fresh COLD water and 1 or 2 tablespoons of conditioner specially formulated for synthetic hair – mix well.

8. Place the wig in the water and gently agitate. Let it soak for two minutes. Remove the wig from the container. Do not rinse, place it on a clean towel and pat dry.
Do not rub, wring or twist your wig.

9. Place wig/hairpiece on wig stand (preferably a folding one for better airing) and let it dry. Do not brush the wig until it is completely dry.

10. Allow it to dry naturally in a COOL area, away from direct sunlight.

11. When the wig is dry, comb it out gently layer by layer starting at the bottom and work your way up. Do not comb Curly wigs. You can use Wig Care Styling Lotion for a better result.

Important Dos and Don’ts

Do undo adjustment straps before washing and while on wig stand.

Do keep wig/hairpiece on stand while not in use.

Don’t allow wig/hairpiece to come into contact with heat/steam, e.g. Ovens, stoves, saunas, spas, etc. Heat and steam will ruin the fibers and the base of your wig/hairpiece.

Don’t use hairdryers to dry your wig.

Don’t put your wig/hairpiece in the washing machine or the dryer.

Don’t use non-recommended shampoo or conditioner.

Don’t rub, wring or twist your wig/hairpiece

It is not advisable to sleep in any full wig. Place on headstand while sleeping.

Don’t expose wig/hairpiece to direct sunlight for long periods of time.

Don’t use hot water on wig/hairpiece

Never use heated styling tools on your wig or expose your wig to excess source of heat such as: hair dryers, curling irons, open ovens, boiling water, barbecue grills and even some cigarette lighters, because the heat will damage the fibres.

Curly Styles:
Using your fingertips is best for curly styles. You can also lightly comb the wig with a wide-toothed styling comb. A brush is not recommended since it will remove the original curls.

Soft Waves:
If your wig has gentle waves or a light curl, you can use a wig brush or a wig styling comb to style.

Straight Styles:
For straight styles, us a wig brush or a wig styling comb, starting at the ends and working your way up. These styles are quick and easy to manage.

Shoulder Length or Longer Styles:
Us a wig styling comb to style.

Additional Tips for All Styles:

At the end of the day after each wearing, be sure to spray the ends of your wig with a conditioner formulated for synthetic hair and gently remove tangles with a wig styling comb or your fingertips. Allow it to dry overnight on a wig stand.

Many styles have bangs and it’s great to try combing them on or off the face for different looks.

For a great wet look, spray the Wig Texture Wax on a dry wig or mist your wig with clean cool water while gently shaking.

To tone down the volume of your wig, mist your wig with Wig Care Styling Lotion or with clean cool water and style with a styling comb or your fingertips. Place it on a wig stand and let it dry in place.

To recondition dry frizzy fibre, use Wig Protector.

Use the Wig Care Hair Spray specially formulated for synthetic hair to hold your style in place. We carry a full line of wig care and styling products.

Special tips to style your wig to compliment your facial structure:

Round, square, and heart shaped faces are better complimented by styling your wig with fullness and volume at the top and combing the sides close to the head.

If you have an oval shaped face then you can style your wig any way your want. You’ve got the perfect shape.

For long shaped faces style the wig fuller on the sides and minimize the height on top.
